Hi. I’m Christina.
I’m on a mission to empower language learners to discover the tools and strategies that work best for them. I believe there’s no single path to mastering a language, but by finding the right approach for your goals, you can succeed at any stage of the journey.
My Language Journey
I studied French for 10+ years at my American high school and university. When I first moved to France, I could cite 17th century poetry («La cigale, ayante chanté tout l’été…), but I had a hard time holding conversations with real French speakers. Eventually, I prevailed, and then decided to move to Spain. Learning Spanish was a new challenge, but having been through one language journey, I taught myself without classes or textbooks.
As an English teacher in Spain, I worked with many kinds of students. Some were brilliant and some really struggled. I became curious about what could account for those differences and wondered if there was a miracle method or magic ingredient I could teach the weaker students. So, I continued my studies to find out the secrets to Second/Foreign Language Acquisition.
Spoiler alert: there’s no magic method to fluency. But there are proven strategies and approaches that can make the process more effective and even enjoyable.
Thanks to these experiences abroad and in the classroom, I’ve come to understand that language learning challenges us to develop discipline, consistency, and the courage to step out of our comfort zones. These skills not only help you become fluent but also enrich every other area of your life. That’s why I founded Love to Lingo—to empower learners to be their best and make meaningful progress on their own terms.
My Aim
Language learning is a long, sometimes uncomfortable process, but you don’t have to go through it alone. My goal is to guide and support you as you navigate the ups and downs of your own language journey.
Meaningful connection lies at the heart of successful language learning—connection with the language, with ourselves, and with others. This process not only helps us communicate, but also opens doors to understanding, growth and new opportunities.
Through Love to Lingo, I aim to facilitate that meaningful connect by sharing practical tools and support for language learners, including:
A podcast and this substack with insights and strategies
Language learning notebooks to help you stay organized and track your progress like successful learners do
Plans to launch online language exchange sessions and a newsletter to connect and support our growing community
If you’re learning a language or supporting others on their path, I’d love for you to join me.
Subscribe and let’s start the journey together.
I'm glad to find your Substack, as language learning has always fascinated me. You might enjoy reading my essay on learning German and French; I'll leave the link below.
I've studied other languages, too--Dutch, Swedish, and Italian (all to be able to read academic literature pertinent to my interests). And now I live, retired, in France. Off all the languages French remains my biggest challenge, in spite of exposure to it in early childhood. I'll be interested to see what tips you and your readers might be able to share.
